Forensic chemistry is the application of chemistry to law enforcement or the failure of products or processes. Many different analytical methods may be used to reveal what chemical changes occurred during an incident, and therefore help reconstruct the sequence of events. Forensic chemistry is unique in that its research, practice, and presentation must meet the needs of both the scientific and the legal communities.

A scanning electron microscope is equipped with an energy-dispersive X-ray detector tool which is used for particle analysis, one of the most frequent applications that forensic scientists use to determine the proximity of a discharging firearm. Micro-XRF is another technique to analyze the area of bullet penetration. Micro-XRF also has other advantages for forensic applications due to its ability to analyze samples in a non-destructive manner.
